Them Academy Award-winning director Natalie Portman will soon be gracing our screens as the new wielder of Thor’s might, but she already possesses a significant amount of that power herself. She’s been an activist since she was a child, working on issues ranging from animal rights to women’s rights to environmental issues.
At the 2020 Academy Awards, Portman took a stand against the latter, donning a black Dior cape embroidered with the names of all the female directors, including Greta Gerwig, who had been passed over by the Academy for nominations. Nonetheless, as many people quickly pointed out, Portman’s own production company, Handsomecharlie Films, had only ever hired one female director – Portman herself – which made her statement all the more impactful than it could have been.
